Operator theory Ordinary and partial differential operators Example
Almost Mathieu operator
Example
Let be real numbers. The almost Mathieu operator acts on the Hilbert space of square-summable sequences by It is a bounded self-adjoint operator. Check: each of the three terms has norm at most , and , so . The shifts and are adjoint to each other, so their sum is self-adjoint, and multiplication by a real sequence is self-adjoint.
Remarks
The operator is a discrete Schrödinger operator with a quasi-periodic potential when is irrational. For irrational , its spectrum does not depend on . Aubry duality relates the operators with coupling and , and is the critical coupling. For irrational , the Lebesgue measure of the spectrum is ; in particular it is zero at . The ten martini problem asked whether the spectrum is a Cantor set for all irrational and all ; Avila and Jitomirskaya proved that it is. Plotting the spectrum against for gives Hofstadter's butterfly.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
