Axiom independence

Statement

An axiom PP is independent of a theory TT, i.e., a collection of sentences, if and only if neither PP nor its negation ¬P\neg P is provable from TT. Equivalently, PP and ¬P\neg P are each consistent with TT, i.e., some models of TT make PP true and others make ¬P\neg P true. Proving the independence of PP from TT is usually done by demonstrating the existence of such models.
