Beta distribution

Definition

Let α>0\alpha > 0 and β>0\beta > 0. The beta distribution with parameters α\alpha and β\beta is the distribution on R\mathbb{R} with the probability density function f(x)={xα−1(1−x)β−1B(α,β)if 0<x<1,0otherwise,f(x) = \begin{cases} \dfrac{x^{\alpha - 1} (1 - x)^{\beta - 1}}{B(\alpha, \beta)} & \text{if } 0 < x < 1, \\ 0 & \text{otherwise,} \end{cases} where B(α,β)=∫01tα−1(1−t)β−1 dtB(\alpha, \beta) = \int_0^1 t^{\alpha - 1} (1 - t)^{\beta - 1} \, dt is the beta function.

Remarks

The mean is α/(α+β)\alpha / (\alpha + \beta) and the variance is αβ(α+β)2(α+β+1)\dfrac{\alpha\beta}{(\alpha + \beta)^2 (\alpha + \beta + 1)}. Beta⁡(1,1)\operatorname{Beta}(1, 1) is the uniform distribution on [0,1][0, 1]. The beta function satisfies B(α,β)=Γ(α)Γ(β)/Γ(α+β)B(\alpha, \beta) = \Gamma(\alpha)\Gamma(\beta)/\Gamma(\alpha + \beta). In Bayesian statistics, the beta distribution is the conjugate prior of the success probability pp of binomial data. A Beta⁡(α,β)\operatorname{Beta}(\alpha, \beta) prior and kk successes in nn trials give a Beta⁡(α+k,β+n−k)\operatorname{Beta}(\alpha + k, \beta + n - k) posterior.

Explanations

L1 human

The beta distribution describes a random proportion, a number between 00 and 11. Large α\alpha pushes the mass toward 11, large β\beta pushes it toward 00, and α=β\alpha = \beta gives a shape that is symmetric about 1/21/2.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
