Boundary layer separation
Summary
Boundary layer separation is the detachment of a boundary layer from the wall, after which the fluid next to the wall flows backward. It happens where the outer flow slows down and the pressure rises downstream. The slow fluid near the wall cannot overcome this adverse pressure gradient. Separation causes the large wakes behind bluff bodies, much of their drag, and the stall of wings at high angles of attack.
