Buckley–Leverett equation
Summary
The Buckley–Leverett equation models the displacement of one fluid by another in a porous rock, such as oil pushed out by injected water. It is a scalar hyperbolic conservation law for the water saturation. Its flux, the fractional flow function, is usually S-shaped and not convex, so solutions combine a shock wave with a rarefaction wave. It is a classic model in petroleum engineering and a standard example in the theory of conservation laws.
