C* identity

Summary

The C* identity is the condition ∥a∗a∥=∥a∥2\norm{a^* a} = \norm{a}^2 on a Banach algebra with an involution. A Banach ∗*-algebra whose norm satisfies it is a C*-algebra. This one equation ties the norm to the algebra so tightly that the algebraic structure determines the norm. Indeed, ∥a∥\norm{a} is the square root of the spectral radius of a∗aa^* a.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
