statement proposition

Cardinality of the power set

Statement

Let AA be a set. Then the power set of AA is equinumerous with the set {0,1}A\{0, 1\}^A of functions from AA to {0,1}\{0, 1\}, so ∣P(A)∣=2∣A∣.|\mathcal{P}(A)| = 2^{|A|}.

Remarks

The bijection sends a subset SS to its indicator function 1S\mathbf{1}_S. For a finite set with nn elements, the power set has 2n2^n elements. For A=NA = \mathbb{N}, ∣P(N)∣=2ℵ0|\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{N})| = 2^{\aleph_0}, the cardinality of the continuum.

Explanations

L1 human

A subset is a choice of "in" or "out" for each element. With nn elements, there are 2⋅2⋯2=2n2 \cdot 2 \cdots 2 = 2^n such choices.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
