Chemical equilibrium
Summary
Chemical equilibrium is the state of a reacting mixture in which the amounts of all species no longer change. In it the forward and reverse reactions balance. At fixed temperature and pressure it is the state of least Gibbs free energy. This means that the stoichiometric sum of the chemical potentials is zero. For ideal mixtures this condition becomes the law of mass action, with an equilibrium constant that depends on temperature through the van 't Hoff equation.
