statement proposition

Composition of injections is injective

Statement

Let f ⁣:A→Bf \colon A \to B and g ⁣:B→Cg \colon B \to C be injective functions. Then the composition g∘f ⁣:A→Cg \circ f \colon A \to C is injective.

Remarks

Proof: if g(f(a))=g(f(a′))g(f(a)) = g(f(a')), then f(a)=f(a′)f(a) = f(a') because gg is injective, and a=a′a = a' because ff is injective. A partial converse holds: if g∘fg \circ f is injective, then ff is injective. The function gg need not be injective.

Explanations

L1 human

Think of ff and gg as machines, and of g∘fg \circ f as the two machines in a chain. If neither machine merges two inputs, the chain does not merge two inputs either.

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
