Confidence interval

Definition

Let XX be a sample whose law PθP_\theta depends on an unknown parameter θ∈Θ\theta \in \Theta. Let τ ⁣:Θ→R\tau \colon \Theta \to \mathbb{R} be a function and let γ∈(0,1)\gamma \in (0, 1). A confidence interval for τ(θ)\tau(\theta) with confidence level γ\gamma is a random interval [L(X),U(X)][L(X), U(X)], where L≤UL \le U are statistics, such that Pθ(L(X)≤τ(θ)≤U(X))=γfor each θ∈Θ.P_\theta\big(L(X) \le \tau(\theta) \le U(X)\big) = \gamma \quad \text{for each } \theta \in \Theta. If only "≥γ\ge \gamma" holds for each θ\theta, the interval is a conservative confidence interval.

Remarks

Example: let X1,…,XnX_1, \dots, X_n be i.i.d. N(μ,σ2)\mathcal{N}(\mu, \sigma^2) with σ\sigma known. Then Xˉn±1.96 σ/n\bar{X}_n \pm 1.96\, \sigma / \sqrt{n} is a confidence interval for μ\mu with level approximately 0.950.95. If σ\sigma is unknown, one replaces σ\sigma with the sample standard deviation and 1.961.96 with a quantile of Student's t-distribution with n−1n - 1 degrees of freedom. The probability refers to the random interval, not to θ\theta. After one computes the interval from data, it either contains τ(θ)\tau(\theta) or it does not. The confidence level is often written as 1−α1 - \alpha, for example 95%95\% for α=0.05\alpha = 0.05.

Explanations

L1 human

A 95%95\% confidence interval comes from a procedure that captures the true value in 95%95\% of repeated experiments. It does not mean that the true value has a 95%95\% probability to be in one particular computed interval.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
