Conjugate variables
Summary
In thermodynamics, conjugate variables are pairs made of an intensive and an extensive variable whose product has the dimension of energy. The main pairs are temperature and entropy, pressure and volume, and chemical potential and number of particles. Up to sign, each intensive variable of a pair is a partial derivative of the internal energy with respect to its extensive partner.
