Functional analysis C*-algebras Example
Cuntz algebra
Example
Let be an integer. The Cuntz algebra is the universal C*-algebra generated by elements subject to the relations So the are isometries, and the projections onto their ranges add up to . The relations imply for : the ranges are mutually orthogonal.
Concrete check for : on the Hilbert space with orthonormal basis , let and . Each maps an orthonormal basis to an orthonormal family, so it is an isometry. The range of is spanned by the even basis vectors and that of by the odd ones, so . The C*-algebra generated by and is a copy of .
Remarks
Cuntz showed that is simple, so any isometries with these relations generate an isomorphic C*-algebra. It is also infinite: is an isometry with . Its K-theory is and , so the algebras for different are not isomorphic. Each is separable and nuclear.
