Deflection of the vertical
Summary
The deflection of the vertical at a point is the angle between the plumb line there and the normal to the reference ellipsoid. It is usually split into a north–south and an east–west component. It measures the slope of the geoid relative to the ellipsoid, and it links astronomical and geodetic coordinates.
