E8 manifold
Description
The manifold is the closed, simply connected, topological 4-manifold whose intersection form is the form of the lattice. This form is positive definite, even and unimodular, of rank and signature . Its existence and its uniqueness up to homeomorphism follow from Freedman's classification, since the form is even. One construction plumbs together eight disk bundles over the -sphere with Euler number , following the pattern of the Dynkin diagram. The boundary of this plumbing is the Poincaré homology sphere. Freedman showed that this homology sphere bounds a contractible topological -manifold, and gluing it to the plumbing along the common boundary gives the manifold.
Remarks
The manifold admits no smooth structure. Indeed its intersection form is even, so a smooth structure would give a closed smooth spin -manifold of signature , against Rokhlin's theorem, which demands signature divisible by . It also follows from Donaldson's theorem, since the form is definite but not diagonalizable over . Its Kirby–Siebenmann invariant is , equal to the signature divided by modulo . Andrew Casson showed that it admits no triangulation at all.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
