Emissivity
Summary
The emissivity of a surface compares the thermal radiation it emits with that of a black body. It is the ratio of the two, both taken at the same temperature. It is a number between and , and it can depend on wavelength, direction and temperature. It is the main surface property in radiative heat transfer calculations. By Kirchhoff's law, at each wavelength and direction it equals the absorptivity of the surface.
