Mechanics of deformable solids Fracture and damage Concept
Energy release rate
Summary
The energy release rate is the decrease of the potential energy of a cracked body per unit area of crack growth. It is the energy that is available to break the material at the crack front. In linear elastic fracture mechanics it is determined by the stress intensity factors through Irwin's relation. Griffith's criterion compares it with the energy needed to create new crack surfaces.
