Equation of time
Summary
The equation of time is apparent solar time minus mean solar time. Apparent time is read from the true Sun, and mean time from a fictitious Sun moving uniformly. It varies over the year between about and minutes. It comes from the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit and from the tilt of the Earth's axis to the orbit.
