Exotic R4
Description
An exotic is a smooth manifold that is homeomorphic to the Euclidean space but not diffeomorphic to with its standard smooth structure. Exotic 's exist. They were found in the early 1980s as a consequence of Freedman's classification of topological -manifolds and Donaldson's theorem on smooth ones.
Remarks
For , every smooth manifold homeomorphic to is diffeomorphic to , so dimension is the only exception. Clifford Taubes showed that there are uncountably many pairwise non-diffeomorphic exotic 's. Some of them, the small exotic 's, embed smoothly as open subsets of the standard ; others, the large ones, do not. The constructions use handle decompositions and Casson handles rather than explicit coordinates.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
