Formally real Jordan algebra
Summary
A formally real Jordan algebra is a real Jordan algebra in which a sum of squares vanishes only when every term is zero. The condition copies the defining property of a formally real field. Jordan, von Neumann and Wigner introduced these algebras as models for the observables of quantum mechanics, and classified the finite-dimensional ones. In finite dimension, formally real Jordan algebras are the same as Euclidean Jordan algebras.
