Generic matrix algebra

Summary

The generic matrix algebra is the algebra generated by finitely many n×nn \times n matrices whose entries are independent commuting variables. It is the "most general" algebra generated by mm matrices of size nn. For every commutative kk-algebra CC, the kk-algebra generated by mm matrices in Mn(C)M_n(C) is a quotient of it. The quotient map substitutes elements of CC for the variables. Over an infinite field kk, it is the relatively free algebra of the variety of algebras that satisfy all identities of Mn(k)M_n(k). It is a domain. It is a basic object in the theory of polynomial identity rings and in the invariant theory of matrices.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
