Geometric morphism

Summary

A geometric morphism f ⁣:ℰ→ℱf \colon \mathcal{E} \to \mathcal{F} between toposes is a pair of adjoint functors f∗⊣f∗f^* \dashv f_*, with f∗ ⁣:ℰ→ℱf_* \colon \mathcal{E} \to \mathcal{F}, whose left adjoint f∗ ⁣:ℱ→ℰf^* \colon \mathcal{F} \to \mathcal{E} preserves finite limits. It is the notion of map between toposes that matches continuous maps between spaces. A continuous map g ⁣:X→Yg \colon X \to Y gives a geometric morphism Sh(X)→Sh(Y)\mathrm{Sh}(X) \to \mathrm{Sh}(Y), with g∗g_* the direct image and g∗g^* the inverse image of sheaves. Points of a topos, and the classifying toposes of geometric theories, are described through geometric morphisms.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
