Geometric optics

Summary

In PDE theory, geometric optics studies high-frequency solutions of wave equations. It uses the ansatz u=eiφ/ε(a0+εa1+⋯)u = e^{i\varphi/\varepsilon}\big(a_0 + \varepsilon a_1 + \cdots\big) with a small wavelength ε\varepsilon. The phase φ\varphi solves a first-order nonlinear equation, the eikonal equation, whose characteristics are the light rays. The amplitudes aka_k solve transport equations along these rays. It explains how the ray picture of light emerges from the wave picture, and it underlies the WKB method and microlocal analysis.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
