Great-circle distance
Summary
The great-circle distance between two points of a sphere is the length of the shortest path between them on the sphere. This path is an arc of a great circle, a circle whose centre is the centre of the sphere. The distance equals the radius times the angle between the two position vectors. On a spherical model of the Earth it is the distance travelled along the surface.
