Harmonic coordinate condition
Summary
The harmonic coordinate condition asks that each coordinate function of a spacetime solve the wave equation of the metric. It is also called the de Donder gauge or the wave gauge. In such coordinates the Einstein field equations become a system of quasilinear wave equations for the components of the metric. This is the key step in the proof that the Einstein equations have a well-posed initial value problem.
