Harmonic number

Definition

Let nn be a natural number. The nn-th harmonic number is the rational number Hn=∑k=1n1k=1+12+⋯+1n.H_n = \sum_{k=1}^{n} \frac{1}{k} = 1 + \frac{1}{2} + \cdots + \frac{1}{n}.

Remarks

The first values are H0=0H_0 = 0, H1=1H_1 = 1, H2=3/2H_2 = 3/2, H3=11/6H_3 = 11/6 and H4=25/12H_4 = 25/12. The harmonic numbers are the partial sums of the harmonic series. They satisfy Hn−ln⁡n→γH_n - \ln n \to \gamma, where γ\gamma is the Euler–Mascheroni constant.

Explanations

L1 human

The harmonic numbers are the running totals of 1+1/2+1/3+⋯1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + \cdots. They grow without bound, but very slowly. One needs n=12367n = 12367 terms to pass 1010.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
