Hartogs number

Summary

In mathematics, specifically in axiomatic set theory, the Hartogs number of a set XX is the least ordinal number α\alpha such that there is no injection from α\alpha into XX. In other words, α\alpha is the least ordinal such that ∣α∣≰∣X∣|\alpha| \not \le |X| (where ∣A∣\lvert A\rvert denotes the cardinality of a set AA). The existence of the Hartogs number of any XX can be proved in Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory (ZF) without relying on the axiom of choice. The map taking XX to α\alpha is sometimes called Hartogs's function.
