Differential geometry Minimal and constant mean curvature surfaces Example

Helicoid

Example

Fix c>0c > 0. For u∈ℝu \in \R and v∈ℝv \in \R, let x(u,v)=(vcos⁡u,  vsin⁡u,  cu).x(u, v) = (v \cos u, \; v \sin u, \; c u). Its image, the helicoid, is swept out by a horizontal line that turns about the zz-axis at a constant rate while it moves up. It is a minimal surface.

Check. The partial derivatives are xu=(−vsin⁡u,vcos⁡u,c)x_u = (-v \sin u, v \cos u, c) and xv=(cos⁡u,sin⁡u,0)x_v = (\cos u, \sin u, 0). So E=v2+c2E = v^2 + c^2, F=0F = 0 and G=1G = 1. The cross product is xu×xv=(−csin⁡u,ccos⁡u,−v)x_u \times x_v = (-c \sin u, c \cos u, -v), with length W=v2+c2W = \sqrt{v^2 + c^2}, and N=(xu×xv)/WN = (x_u \times x_v)/W. The second derivatives are xuu=(−vcos⁡u,−vsin⁡u,0)x_{uu} = (-v \cos u, -v \sin u, 0), xuv=(−sin⁡u,cos⁡u,0)x_{uv} = (-\sin u, \cos u, 0) and xvv=0x_{vv} = 0. So the coefficients of the second fundamental form are e=0e = 0, f=c/Wf = c/W and g=0g = 0. The mean curvature is H=eG−2fF+gE2(EG−F2)=0H = \dfrac{eG - 2fF + gE}{2(EG - F^2)} = 0.

Remarks

The Gaussian curvature is K=−f2/(EG)=−c2/(v2+c2)2K = -f^2/(EG) = -c^2/(v^2 + c^2)^2. The helicoid is a ruled surface, and together with the plane it is the only ruled minimal surface in ℝ3\R^3. It is locally isometric to the catenoid.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
