Herschel–Bulkley fluid

Example

A Herschel–Bulkley fluid has a yield stress τ0≥0\tau_0 \ge 0, a consistency k>0k > 0 and a flow index n>0n > 0. In a simple shear flow with shear rate γ˙≥0\dot\gamma \ge 0 and shear stress τ≥0\tau \ge 0, its law is γ˙=0 if τ≤τ0,τ=τ0+kγ˙ n if γ˙>0.\dot\gamma = 0 \text{ if } \tau \le \tau_0, \qquad \tau = \tau_0 + k \dot\gamma^{\,n} \text{ if } \dot\gamma > 0. For γ˙>0\dot\gamma > 0 the apparent viscosity is τ/γ˙=τ0/γ˙+kγ˙ n−1\tau / \dot\gamma = \tau_0 / \dot\gamma + k \dot\gamma^{\,n - 1}. Unless τ0=0\tau_0 = 0 and n=1n = 1, this depends on γ˙\dot\gamma, so the fluid is a non-Newtonian fluid.

Remarks

The model contains the two simpler ones. For n=1n = 1 it is the Bingham plastic. For τ0=0\tau_0 = 0 it is the power-law fluid. For τ0=0\tau_0 = 0 and n=1n = 1 it is a Newtonian fluid with viscosity kk.
