Example

Let S3={(z0,z1)∈ℂ2:∣z0∣2+∣z1∣2=1}S^3 = \set{(z_0, z_1) \in \C^2 : \abs{z_0}^2 + \abs{z_1}^2 = 1}, and identify ℝ3\R^3 with ℂ×ℝ\C \times \R. Define h ⁣:S3→ℝ3h \colon S^3 \to \R^3 by h(z0,z1)=(2z0z1‾, ∣z0∣2−∣z1∣2).h(z_0, z_1) = \bigl(2 z_0 \overline{z_1}, \ \abs{z_0}^2 - \abs{z_1}^2\bigr). The image lies in the unit sphere S2S^2, because ∣2z0z1‾∣2+(∣z0∣2−∣z1∣2)2=(∣z0∣2+∣z1∣2)2=1.\abs{2 z_0 \overline{z_1}}^2 + \bigl(\abs{z_0}^2 - \abs{z_1}^2\bigr)^2 = \bigl(\abs{z_0}^2 + \abs{z_1}^2\bigr)^2 = 1. Two points of S3S^3 have the same image if and only if one is (λz0,λz1)(\lambda z_0, \lambda z_1) for the other (z0,z1)(z_0, z_1) and some λ∈ℂ\lambda \in \C with ∣λ∣=1\abs{\lambda} = 1. So each fibre of h ⁣:S3→S2h \colon S^3 \to S^2 is a circle. The map hh is a fibre bundle with fibre S1S^1, hence a Serre fibration. Equivalently, hh is the quotient map S3→ℂP1≅S2S^3 \to \C P^1 \cong S^2, (z0,z1)↦[z0:z1](z_0, z_1) \mapsto [z_0 : z_1].

Remarks

The long exact sequence of homotopy groups of S1→S3→S2S^1 \to S^3 \to S^2 gives π2(S2)≅ℤ\pi_2(S^2) \cong \Z and π3(S2)≅π3(S3)≅ℤ\pi_3(S^2) \cong \pi_3(S^3) \cong \Z. The class of hh generates π3(S2)\pi_3(S^2), and hh has Hopf invariant ±1\pm 1. Any two fibres are linked circles in S3S^3, with linking number ±1\pm 1. Similar fibrations S3→S7→S4S^3 \to S^7 \to S^4 and S7→S15→S8S^7 \to S^{15} \to S^8 come from the quaternions and the octonions.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
