Horn
Definition
For let , and let be the standard -simplex simplicial set, whose -simplices are the order-preserving maps . Let and . The horn is the simplicial subset of whose -simplices are the order-preserving maps such that The horn is inner if and outer if or .
Remarks
Equivalently, is the union of the faces for , where is the face that omits the vertex . Its geometric realization is the boundary of the -simplex with the interior of the face opposite the vertex removed.
Example: consists of the edges and and their vertices. The edge is the map with image , and , so it is not in . The edge has image , and , so it is in .
Non-example: the boundary contains all three edges, so it is not a horn. The edge fails the condition for , the edge for , and the edge for .
A map to a simplicial set is the same as a family of simplices , , that agree on their common faces.
