Image (mathematics)

Summary

In mathematics, the image of a function f:X→Yf: X \to Y is the set of all f(x)f(x) such that xx belongs to the domain of ff. The image by ff of an element xx of the domain of ff is f(x)f(x), that is, the output corresponding to the input xx. The image by ff of a subset SS of the domain of ff is the set of all f(x)f(x) such that xx is in SS, that is, the set of the images of the elements of SS. Equivalently, it is the image of the restriction of ff to SS.
