Kozai mechanism
Summary
The Kozai mechanism, or Lidov–Kozai mechanism, is a slow periodic exchange between the eccentricity and the inclination of an orbit. It is caused by a distant third body. When the inclination is large enough, a nearly circular orbit becomes very eccentric and then circular again, over and over. It shapes the orbits of irregular moons, asteroids, satellites and triple stars. See the definition.
