Limb darkening
Summary
Limb darkening is the decrease of the brightness of the disk of a star from its centre to its edge, the limb. It happens because the temperature of a stellar atmosphere increases with depth, and a line of sight near the limb only reaches higher, cooler layers. A limb-darkening law gives the intensity as a function of the angle between the line of sight and the surface normal. It must be modelled to interpret eclipses of binary stars and transits of exoplanets.
