Lindblad resonance
Summary
A Lindblad resonance is a radius in a rotating disc where stars meet a rotating pattern at the rate of their radial oscillation. The pattern may be a bar or a spiral. There the pattern pushes the orbit in step with its epicyclic motion, and its response is strong. Lindblad resonances shape spiral arms, bars and rings in galaxies, and gaps and waves in planetary rings.
