Lorentz factor

Definition

Let c>0c > 0 be the speed of light. Let vv be a real number with ∣v∣<c\abs{v} < c, the speed of a body relative to an inertial frame. The Lorentz factor of vv is γ(v)=11−v2/c2.\gamma(v) = \frac{1}{\sqrt{1 - v^2 / c^2}}. With β=v/c\beta = v / c it reads γ=1/1−β2\gamma = 1 / \sqrt{1 - \beta^2}.

Remarks

Example: for v=0.6cv = 0.6 c, one has β2=0.36\beta^2 = 0.36, 1−0.36=0.8\sqrt{1 - 0.36} = 0.8 and γ=1.25\gamma = 1.25. Non-example: for v=cv = c the denominator is 00, so the Lorentz factor is not defined; it tends to +∞+\infty as ∣v∣→c\abs{v} \to c. Always γ≥1\gamma \ge 1, with equality only at v=0v = 0, and γ=1+12β2+O(β4)\gamma = 1 + \tfrac{1}{2} \beta^2 + O(\beta^4) for small β\beta. The useful identity γ2(1−β2)=1\gamma^2 (1 - \beta^2) = 1 is equivalent to γ2−(γβ)2=1\gamma^2 - (\gamma \beta)^2 = 1.
