Modes of fracture
Summary
The modes of fracture are the three basic ways in which the faces of a crack move relative to each other. Mode I is opening, mode II is sliding in the direction perpendicular to the crack front, and mode III is tearing along the crack front. Every crack-tip displacement field in linear elasticity is a superposition of the three modes, and each mode has its own stress intensity factor. In fracture mechanics most cracks in brittle materials grow so that the loading at the tip is pure mode I.
