Momentum operator

Summary

The momentum operator is the observable that corresponds to the momentum of a particle. On L2(ℝ)L^2(\R) it acts on smooth wave functions by Pψ=−iℏ ψ′P\psi = -i\hbar\, \psi'. The Fourier transform turns it into multiplication by ℏk\hbar k, so it is self-adjoint with spectrum ℝ\R, like the position operator. Position and momentum satisfy the canonical commutation relation, which leads to the uncertainty principle.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
