Multinomial coefficient

Definition

Let k1,…,kmk_1, \dots, k_m be natural numbers and let n=k1+⋯+kmn = k_1 + \dots + k_m. The multinomial coefficient is the natural number (nk1,k2,…,km)=n!k1! k2!⋯km!.\binom{n}{k_1, k_2, \dots, k_m} = \frac{n!}{k_1!\, k_2! \cdots k_m!}.

Remarks

For m=2m = 2 it is the binomial coefficient: (nk,n−k)=(nk)\binom{n}{k, n-k} = \binom{n}{k}. It counts the ways to put nn distinct objects into mm labelled boxes, with kik_i objects in box ii. It also counts the distinct words that use a letter aia_i exactly kik_i times. For example, MISSISSIPPI has 11!1! 4! 4! 2!=34650\frac{11!}{1!\,4!\,4!\,2!} = 34650 distinct rearrangements. It is the coefficient in the multinomial theorem.

Explanations

L1 human

The multinomial coefficient counts the ways to split nn objects into groups of given sizes. To split 4 people into a group of 2 and two groups of 1, with labelled groups, there are 4!2! 1! 1!=12\frac{4!}{2!\,1!\,1!} = 12 ways.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this
