Open map

Definition

Let XX and YY be topological spaces. A function f ⁣:X→Yf \colon X \to Y is an open map when for each open set UU of XX, the image f(U)f(U) is open in YY.

Remarks

The projections of a product X×Y→XX \times Y \to X are open maps. A continuous bijection is a homeomorphism if and only if it is an open map. The map R→R\mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}, x↦x2x \mapsto x^2, is continuous but not open: the image of (−1,1)(-1, 1) is [0,1)[0, 1).

Explanations

L1 human

An open map keeps open sets open when you push them forward. Continuity is about pulling open sets back, so the two notions are different.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
