Operator system

Definition

Let AA be a unital C*-algebra with unit 11 and involution a↦a∗a \mapsto a^*. An operator system in AA is a linear subspace S⊆AS \subseteq A such that:

  1. 1∈S1 \in S;
  2. a∗∈Sa^* \in S for every a∈Sa \in S.

Remarks

Example: in the C*-algebra C(𝕋)C(\mathbb{T}) of continuous functions on the unit circle 𝕋={z∈ℂ:∣z∣=1}\mathbb{T} = \set{z \in \C : \abs{z} = 1}, let SS be the span of 1,z,zˉ1, z, \bar z. It contains 11, and (a+bz+czˉ)∗=aˉ+cˉz+bˉzˉ(a + b z + c \bar z)^* = \bar a + \bar c z + \bar b \bar z lies in SS, so SS is an operator system. Non-example: the span of 11 and zz in C(𝕋)C(\mathbb{T}) contains 11 but not zˉ\bar z. Indeed, if zˉ=a+bz\bar z = a + b z on 𝕋\mathbb{T}, then z=1z = 1 and z=−1z = -1 give a=0a = 0 and b=1b = 1, but then z=iz = i gives −i=i-i = i. Every self-adjoint element hh of an operator system SS satisfies −∥h∥1≤h≤∥h∥1-\norm{h} 1 \le h \le \norm{h} 1, so SS is spanned by its positive elements. Many authors take A=B(H)A = B(H) for a Hilbert space HH, and some also require SS to be norm closed.
