Optical soliton
Summary
An optical soliton is a pulse or beam of light whose shape does not change as it propagates. A nonlinear effect exactly balances dispersion or diffraction. Temporal solitons are pulses in fibres, where the Kerr effect balances group-velocity dispersion. Spatial solitons are beams that do not spread, where self-focusing balances diffraction. They are solitons of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in optics and its variants.
