Orbital resonance
Summary
An orbital resonance occurs when bodies orbiting the same primary have periods in a ratio close to a ratio of small integers. Their mutual pulls then act coherently. Repeated encounters at the same points of their orbits then add up instead of averaging out. Resonances can protect orbits, as for Pluto and Neptune, or destabilise them, as for the gaps in the asteroid belt. See the definition.
