P-value
Definition
Consider a hypothesis test of a null hypothesis with a test statistic , where large values of are evidence against . Let be the observed value of . The p-value of the observation is If is simple, , then .
Remarks
For a two-sided test with a statistic that is symmetric about under , one uses . The test that rejects when has significance level . If is simple and has a continuous law under , then the random p-value has the uniform distribution on under . The p-value is not the probability that is true.
Explanations
L1 human
The p-value tells how surprising your data would be if the null hypothesis were true. Example: a coin shows heads in tosses. If the coin is fair, the probability of at least heads is about . This is the one-sided p-value.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
