Geophysics Gravity field of the Earth Concept
Physical geodesy
Summary
Physical geodesy is the part of geodesy that studies the gravity field of the Earth. Its main objects are the geopotential, the geoid, normal gravity and gravity anomalies. Its mathematics is potential theory: harmonic functions, spherical harmonic expansions and boundary value problems for Laplace's equation. It provides heights above sea level and the reference surfaces that link geometric positions to the direction of gravity.
