Planetary boundary layer
Summary
The planetary boundary layer is the lowest part of the atmosphere, in which the flow is directly affected by contact with the Earth's surface. It is usually turbulent, and it exchanges momentum, heat and moisture between the surface and the free atmosphere above. Its depth varies from about a hundred metres on calm nights to one or two kilometres or more on sunny days. It is the atmospheric example of a boundary layer, with rotation and stratification added.
