Poisson point process
Definition
Let . A homogeneous Poisson process with rate is a stochastic process with values in such that:
- .
- For all , the increments are independent.
- For all , has the Poisson distribution with parameter .
Remarks
counts the points, or events, in the interval . One usually also asks that the paths are right-continuous. The times between consecutive events are i.i.d. with the exponential distribution . Conversely, i.i.d. gaps define a Poisson process with rate . Given , the event times in have the law of independent uniform points in , put in increasing order. On a general space with a measure , a Poisson point process has independent counts in disjoint sets. The count in a set has the law when .
Explanations

The Poisson process models events that happen "completely at random" in time, such as clicks of a Geiger counter or arrivals of customers. On average, events happen per unit of time, and the waiting times between events are exponential.
