Power-reduction formula for cosine

Statement

For every real xx, cos⁡2x=1+cos⁡2x2,sin⁡2x=1−cos⁡2x2.\cos^2 x = \frac{1 + \cos 2x}{2}, \qquad \sin^2 x = \frac{1 - \cos 2x}{2}.

Remarks

The addition formula gives cos⁡2x=cos⁡2x−sin⁡2x\cos 2x = \cos^2 x - \sin^2 x. With the Pythagorean identity, cos⁡2x=2cos⁡2x−1=1−2sin⁡2x\cos 2x = 2 \cos^2 x - 1 = 1 - 2 \sin^2 x. These formulas give ∫0πcos⁡2x dx=π2\int_0^{\pi} \cos^2 x \, dx = \frac{\pi}{2}. Mathlib states the first one as Real.cos_sq.

Explanations

A square of a cosine is a cosine of the double angle, shifted and scaled. This turns squares into first powers, which are easy to integrate.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
