Prandtl stress function
Summary
The Prandtl stress function is a scalar function on the cross-section of a twisted bar whose derivatives give the shear stresses. It turns the torsion of prismatic bars into a Poisson equation with zero boundary values. The torque is twice its integral over the cross-section, and the shear stress is tangent to its level curves.
