Group theory and generalizations Classification of finite simple groups Example
Projective special linear group
Example
Let be a field and let be an integer. The projective special linear group is the quotient group where is the special linear group and is its centre. The centre consists of the scalar matrices with . For a finite field with elements, write .
Take and . The order of is . The scalars with are , so . Hence has order . It is a simple group, and it is the second smallest non-abelian simple group, after the alternating group of order .
Remarks
The group has order It is simple for all and all prime powers , except and . These groups form one of the infinite families of groups of Lie type in the classification of finite simple groups. The group acts faithfully on the projective space of lines in , which explains the name.
