Proof of Extension of Lagrange's theorem

Proof

Let SS be a set of coset representatives for KK in HH, so H=⨆s∈SsKH = \bigsqcup_{s \in S} sK (disjoint union), and ∣S∣=[H:K]|S|=[H:K]. For any a∈Ga \in G, left-multiplication-by-aa is a bijection G→GG \to G, so aH=⨆s∈SasKaH = \bigsqcup_{s \in S} asK. Thus each left coset of HH decomposes into [H:K][H:K] left cosets of KK. Since GG decomposes into [G:H][G:H] left cosets of HH, each of which decomposes into [H:K][H:K] left cosets of KK, the total number [G:K][G:K] of left cosets of KK in GG is [G:H][H:K][G:H][H:K].

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • edge uses out: each node that the argument needs (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
